Buyer’s Remorse Could Hit Democrats

Filed under: Clinton, Democrats, McCain, Obama, Taxes — oldelephant @ 11:00 pm

I believe if Democrats nominate Barack Obama they may soon be having buyer’s remorse.
The heavily “blue” tinge of the front-loaded primaries of 2008 did two things. First, it gave Republicans a candidate who can appeal to moderates and independents. Second, it turned the Democrat contest into a race to the left.
The Clinton campaign, running in the primaries, chose to veer left. Rather than go after Obama for being out of the mainstream, they concentrated on small quibbles over who opposed the Bush administration the most.
In retrospect, it was probably a mistake. But, to be fair, they had little choice. Given the structure of the primaries, it was almost guaranteed that the most liberal candidate would dominate.
But, as the campaign shifts to the November election, voters will soon learn that far from being the blank canvass many people believe he is, Barack Obama does indeed have a record.
And, what a record it is. There’s a long list of tax and spend votes in the Illinois legislature. There are his votes against second amendment rights, his votes against anti-crime initiatives, his votes to push the state further into debt and his votes to repeal welfare reforms.
If Obama is the candidate (and I’m not quite ready to write the Clinton’s off just yet), Democrats may be kicking themselves next fall and Republicans will be well positioned to retain the White House for at least four more years.
